Where to Stay in Dakar, Senegal: Best Hotels for Every Kind of Trip

Best hotels in Dakar Senegal

Atlantic Ocean views, beaches, markets, museums, restaurants, music, contemporary city life and easy access to some of Senegal’s most important sights all come together in Dakar.

But where you stay can change the trip considerably.

Dakar stretches across the Cap-Vert Peninsula, and its hotels range from smaller properties around Les Almadies to full waterfront resorts and polished city hotels closer to central Dakar.

That means there is no single “best hotel in Dakar” for everybody.

A couple may want a stylish hotel where the pool and outdoor spaces make downtime feel romantic. A solo traveler may care more about breakfast, practical services and having restaurants and beaches nearby. Friends may actively want a resort where they can spend an entire afternoon without leaving. Families need completely different amenities again.

And travelers spending for luxury should actually get a luxury experience—not simply whichever hotel happens to have the highest room rate.

If Dakar is only one stop in a larger Senegal trip, see Best Places to Visit in Senegal: Dakar, Gorée Island, Saint-Louis, Sine-Saloum, Saly & More to start building the rest of your itinerary.

This guide breaks down the best hotels in Dakar by traveler type so you can choose the property that actually fits the trip you are taking.

Best Hotel in Dakar for Couples

A couples hotel does not need to be a giant resort.

Sometimes the better romantic stay is somewhere polished enough that you enjoy being there, but relaxed enough that the hotel does not take over the entire vacation.

My Pick: Hôtel BOMA

Hôtel BOMA

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 4-star property
  • Area: Dakar, convenient for Ngor and Les Almadies
  • Orientation: Useful for Ngor Beach, restaurants, relaxed afternoons, beach time and travelers who want access to western Dakar
  • Best for: Couples, anniversaries, romantic trips, first-time Dakar visitors and travelers who want a smaller upscale hotel rather than a large resort
  • Hotel style: Modern four-star hotel with outdoor pool, terrace, garden, restaurant, bar, Wi-Fi and outdoor entertaining areas

Hôtel BOMA is my couples pick because it feels like somewhere you can actually enjoy spending part of the day.

There is an outdoor pool.

There is a terrace and garden.

There are outdoor spaces for sitting around rather than treating the room as nothing more than somewhere to sleep.

Ngor Beach is also within walking distance, while restaurants and other parts of western Dakar remain accessible.

That combination works particularly well for a couple.

You can spend the morning sightseeing.

Come back and swim.

Have a slower afternoon.

Go back out for dinner.

You are getting a romantic-feeling hotel without committing to the much larger resort experience at Terrou-Bi or paying for the full five-star positioning of Pullman.

Hôtel BOMA also currently carries one of the strongest guest ratings in this entire group, which makes it easier to recommend as more than simply the prettiest option on the page.

One thing to know if mobility is a concern: the property does not have an elevator, which is another reason I would keep Azalai firmly in our lower-mobility category instead.

I’d choose Hôtel BOMA for a couples trip when you want an upscale four-star stay with a pool, attractive outdoor spaces, restaurants and beaches nearby, and enough atmosphere to make returning to the hotel part of the vacation.

Best Hotel in Dakar for Solo Travelers

Solo travel makes practical conveniences disproportionately valuable.

Breakfast at the hotel matters.

Luggage storage matters.

Being able to find food without turning every meal into a transportation project matters.

And when you are exploring an unfamiliar city alone, I would rather choose a hotel that makes everyday logistics easier than one that simply has the longest amenity list.

My Pick: Yaas Hotel Dakar Almadies

 Yaas Hotel Dakar Almadies

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 3.5-star property
  • Area: Les Almadies
  • Orientation: Useful for Pointe des Almadies Beach, Ngor Beach, restaurants, western Dakar and travelers who want a practical base
  • Best for: Solo travelers, independent travelers, first-time visitors, shorter stays and travelers who prioritize easy everyday logistics
  • Hotel style: Modern hotel with free breakfast, restaurant, café, bar, Wi-Fi, luggage storage, coworking space and airport pickup option

Yaas makes sense for solo travelers because it handles a lot of the boring-but-important parts of travel for you.

Breakfast is included.

There is a restaurant and café.

There is free Wi-Fi, luggage storage and coworking space.

Airport pickup can also be arranged for an additional charge.

That is a very useful combination when there is nobody else sharing the planning.

Pointe des Almadies Beach and Ngor Beach are both relatively close, and several restaurants are nearby as well.

You do not need the hotel itself to be the main attraction.

You need somewhere comfortable to come back to, somewhere to start the morning without immediately searching for breakfast, and somewhere that helps reduce the number of small logistical decisions you have to make every day.

Yaas also has an elevator, which can make luggage considerably less annoying after a long travel day.

This is not my pick for travelers who want a pool-and-resort vacation.

Terrou-Bi or Pullman make much more sense for that.

For someone primarily coming to explore Dakar independently, however, I like the simplicity here.

I’d choose Yaas Hotel Dakar Almadies for a solo trip when you want breakfast, Wi-Fi, food onsite, luggage storage, practical travel services and a comfortable base in Les Almadies without paying resort prices.

Best Hotel in Dakar for Friend Trips

Friend trips need options.

Someone wants to swim.

Someone wants to sleep late.

Someone wants drinks.

Someone wants to go sightseeing.

Someone has suddenly decided that absolutely nothing requiring shoes, transportation or effort is happening until dinner.

The best friend-trip hotel is one where those differences do not automatically become a group negotiation.

My Pick: Terrou-Bi Resort

Terrou-Bi Resort

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 5-star property
  • Area: Dakar waterfront / Corniche Ouest
  • Orientation: Useful for beach time, resort days, Dakar sightseeing, celebrations and groups that want built-in entertainment
  • Best for: Friend trips, birthday trips, celebrations, groups with different interests and travelers who want both sightseeing and resort downtime
  • Hotel style: Five-star beachfront resort with private beach, outdoor pool, children’s pool, marina, casino, restaurant, poolside bar and live entertainment

Terrou-Bi wins this category because there is actually something to do when the group does not feel like going anywhere.

The resort has a private beach and outdoor pool.

It also has a marina, casino, poolside bar, restaurant and live shows or concerts.

That is a completely different proposition from booking a standard city hotel.

Friends can spend the morning sightseeing together and disappear into different plans later.

Someone can go to the pool.

Someone can sit by the water.

Someone can nap.

Someone can investigate the casino.

Then everybody can meet again for dinner.

That kind of flexibility becomes increasingly valuable the longer a group trip lasts.

You do not have to manufacture an itinerary simply because everyone is awake.

Terrou-Bi also works well for a celebration trip where you deliberately want the hotel to feel a little more exciting than a practical base.

Just pay attention to the exact room configuration before booking.

Never assume that a room technically capable of sleeping several adults has the bed arrangement, bathroom space or privacy your group actually wants.

Sometimes two rooms are worth every penny.

I’d choose Terrou-Bi Resort for a friend trip when a private beach, pool, marina, casino, dining and live entertainment sound like advantages rather than amenities you will never use.

Best Hotel in Dakar for Families

Family hotel selection is less about what looks beautiful in photographs and more about how many problems the hotel can quietly solve.

Is there somewhere to swim?

Can you eat without reorganizing the entire family?

Can parents build downtime into the day?

Are there room configurations that make sense?

Can children be entertained without another full expedition?

My Pick: Noom Hotel Dakar Sea Plaza, a Member of Radisson Individuals

Noom Hotel Dakar Sea Plaza, a Member of Radisson Individuals

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 5-star property
  • Area: Dakar
  • Orientation: Useful for families who want hotel amenities, shopping access, pool time and a comfortable base for sightseeing
  • Best for: Families, multigenerational trips, longer stays, parents who want childcare options and travelers who like full-service hotels
  • Hotel style: Five-star family-friendly hotel with outdoor pool, supervised childcare option, connecting rooms, spa, three restaurants, health club and shopping onsite

Noom gives families something I value enormously: backup plans.

There is an outdoor pool.

There are three restaurants.

Supervised childcare is available for an additional charge.

Connecting rooms can be requested subject to availability.

The hotel also connects to shopping and includes a spa, health club and additional services onsite.

That creates flexibility on the days when the original sightseeing schedule stops working.

Maybe everyone is tired.

Maybe the weather changes.

Maybe one child desperately needs downtime while another still has enough energy to power Dakar.

A family-friendly hotel means those moments do not automatically become bad travel days.

You can return to the hotel and still have things available.

Families should examine room categories very carefully before booking.

Check maximum occupancy.

Check the actual bed configuration.

Ask about connecting rooms if you need them.

Look at crib and rollaway charges rather than assuming they are automatically included.

A five-star hotel does not magically make an incorrectly sized room comfortable for four people and all of their luggage.

I’d choose Noom Hotel Dakar Sea Plaza for families when a pool, restaurants, childcare options, connecting rooms and full hotel facilities can make the practical side of traveling with children considerably easier.

Best Dakar Hotel for Older Travelers and Lower Mobility

This category deserves more care than simply finding an upscale hotel with an elevator.

The entrance matters.

The bathroom matters.

The route through the hotel matters.

Elevator access matters.

And different travelers can have completely different needs even when both describe themselves as having limited mobility.

My Pick: Azalai Hotel Dakar

Azalai Hotel Dakar

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 4.5-star property
  • Area: Dakar, near the ocean
  • Orientation: Useful for travelers who want a full-service hotel with extensive amenities while prioritizing documented accessibility features
  • Best for: Older travelers, lower-mobility travelers, multigenerational trips, guests who need elevator access and travelers who want clearer accessibility information before booking
  • Hotel style: Upscale oceanfront hotel with elevator, outdoor pool, spa, restaurants, garden and multiple specifically listed accessibility features

Azalai is my pick because the accessibility information goes beyond a generic symbol.

The property lists an elevator with a 43-inch-wide door.

It lists a well-lit path to the entrance.

It lists wheelchair accessibility with possible limitations and a wheelchair-accessible bathroom vanity.

Lower electrical outlets in the bathroom and visual fire alarms are also specifically identified.

That gives travelers something concrete to work with.

Azalai is also a substantial hotel in its own right, with an outdoor pool, spa facilities, three restaurants, garden, convenience store and other full-service amenities.

That can be useful for travelers who simply tire more quickly even if they do not use a wheelchair.

You can deliberately build rest into the trip.

You can eat at the hotel.

You can spend part of the afternoon there without feeling stranded.

But accessibility is extremely individual.

If a specific feature is essential, contact the hotel before booking and confirm the exact room.

Ask about the route from the entrance to the room.

Ask about the bathroom.

Ask about shower access, grab bars if needed, bed height, doorway width and distance from the elevator.

“Wheelchair accessible” never guarantees that every room works for every body or every piece of mobility equipment.

I’d choose Azalai Hotel Dakar when mobility matters and you want specifically documented accessibility features combined with the services and amenities of a polished full-service hotel.

Best Luxury Hotel in Dakar

Luxury should actually buy you something.

It should not simply mean you found the most expensive room on your dates.

For this category, I want a true five-star property where the setting, facilities and service level noticeably change the experience.

My Pick: Pullman Dakar Teranga

Pullman Dakar Teranga

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 5-star property
  • Area: Central Dakar near Place de l’Indépendance
  • Orientation: Useful for central sightseeing, oceanfront downtime, major celebrations, higher-end city breaks and travelers who want both Dakar access and resort-style amenities
  • Best for: Luxury travelers, milestone trips, anniversaries, special occasions and travelers willing to make the hotel part of the vacation
  • Hotel style: Five-star oceanfront hotel with private beach access, outdoor pool, spa, restaurants, poolside bar, garden and central Dakar location

Pullman is my luxury winner because it does not require us to stretch the definition.

It is a genuine five-star oceanfront hotel.

There is private beach access, an outdoor pool and an onsite spa.

There are two restaurants, a poolside bar, garden and terrace.

At the same time, you are not retreating so far into a resort that Dakar itself becomes inconvenient.

Place de l’Indépendance is only a few minutes away on foot, and Dakar Station is also within walking distance.

That gives this hotel an advantage I really like for a city luxury trip.

You can spend the morning sightseeing.

Come back.

Swim.

Book a massage.

Sit by the water.

Have dinner.

Then decide whether tomorrow is another full sightseeing day or a much slower one.

Luxury should give you permission to stop doing things for a while.

Pay attention to room categories before spending this much.

Ocean views, room size, included breakfast, cancellation terms and other upgrades can vary considerably.

Do not assume the most dramatic photograph on a hotel page represents the least expensive room.

I’d choose Pullman Dakar Teranga for a true luxury Dakar trip when you want five-star surroundings, oceanfront amenities, spa and pool time, restaurants and a central enough location that experiencing the city remains easy.

Best Mid-Range Hotel in Dakar

Mid-range is about where the price sits in the local market.

It is not the same thing as star rating.

You can sometimes get a lovely property without paying for the facilities of a massive five-star resort—and if you were not going to use those facilities anyway, that can be the smarter booking.

My Pick: La Résidence Dakar

La Résidence Dakar

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 3.5-star property
  • Area: Les Almadies
  • Orientation: Useful for beaches, golf, slower stays and travelers who want a quieter hotel in western Dakar
  • Best for: Mid-range travelers, couples, independent travelers, longer stays and visitors who value atmosphere over giant-resort amenities
  • Hotel style: Smaller hotel with outdoor pool, garden, terrace, restaurant, bar, Wi-Fi and relaxed Les Almadies setting

La Résidence is exactly the kind of mid-range property I like including in these guides.

You still get an outdoor pool.

There is a garden and terrace.

There is an onsite restaurant and bar.

Pointe des Almadies Beach is within walking distance, while Ngor Beach is also nearby.

What you are not paying for is the enormous infrastructure of a five-star waterfront resort.

That can be a very good trade.

Not everybody needs a casino, multiple restaurants, spa complex and an entire day’s worth of activities inside the hotel.

Sometimes you want somewhere pleasant to have breakfast, come back for a swim, sit outside for a while and sleep.

This does that.

One important consideration: La Résidence does not have an elevator, so it would not be my choice when stairs are difficult.

For travelers without that concern, however, I like the balance between location, atmosphere and amenities.

I’d choose La Résidence Dakar when you want a quieter Les Almadies stay with a pool, garden, terrace and restaurant without moving into Dakar’s full luxury-resort price tier.

Best Budget Hotel in Dakar

Budget should actually save you money.

That sounds obvious, but hotel roundups frequently call something “budget” simply because it costs less than the luxury hotel.

That is not enough.

I want the inexpensive choice to stand on its own as somewhere I would still be comfortable recommending.

My Pick: International Hotel Dakar

 International Hotel Dakar

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 4-star property
  • Area: Dakar, near the airport side of the city
  • Orientation: Useful for travelers watching hotel costs, practical stays, longer trips and travelers who prioritize amenities over a beachfront location
  • Best for: Budget travelers, solo travelers, couples watching costs, longer stays and anyone who wants a private full-service hotel without paying Dakar resort prices
  • Hotel style: Four-star hotel with free breakfast, restaurant, bar, gym, Wi-Fi, parking, elevator and airport shuttle option

International Hotel Dakar is a particularly good budget find because the lower price does not mean stripping the stay down to a bed and a locked door.

It is actually a four-star hotel.

Breakfast is included.

There is a restaurant and bar.

There is a gym, free Wi-Fi, free parking and an elevator.

An airport shuttle can also be arranged for an additional charge.

That is a substantial amount of hotel for the budget category.

The trade-off is location.

This is not the hotel I would choose if your dream is to walk straight from the lobby onto a private Atlantic beach.

That is what the more expensive resort categories are buying you.

But if you are going to spend most of the day exploring anyway, paying dramatically more for a beautiful resort you barely see may not make sense.

This is also why I do not automatically assign the lowest star rating to Budget.

International Hotel Dakar currently sits toward the inexpensive end of our selected properties while still carrying four stars and a strong guest rating.

I’d choose International Hotel Dakar when keeping hotel costs under control matters more than having a resort location and you still want breakfast, Wi-Fi, restaurant access, a gym and other full-service hotel conveniences.

Best Hotel in Dakar for Business Travelers

Business travel has its own definition of luxury.

Reliable Wi-Fi can matter more than a pool.

A desk can matter more than a beach.

A business center can be more useful than a spa.

And having room to work without balancing a laptop on the bed can make a surprisingly large difference after several days.

My Pick: AfricaWorks Suites

AfricaWorks Suites

Quick facts:

  • Star rating: 3-star property
  • Area: Dakar
  • Orientation: Useful for work trips, university-related travel, longer business stays and travelers who want more room than a traditional hotel room
  • Best for: Business travelers, remote workers, extended work trips, solo professionals and travelers who appreciate suite-style accommodation
  • Hotel style: Three-star suite property with business center, rooftop terrace, 24-hour gym, free Wi-Fi, work-friendly rooms and kitchenette options

AfricaWorks Suites makes far more sense for this category than simply putting a traditional upscale hotel here because it happens to have meeting rooms.

The property has a business center.

There is free in-room Wi-Fi.

There is a 24-hour gym and rooftop terrace.

Rooms include practical work-friendly features, and some suite categories have separate sitting areas and private kitchenettes.

That last part can matter enormously on a longer work trip.

You can make coffee.

Keep food in the room.

Eat something simple without another restaurant meal.

Sit somewhere other than the bed.

Work without feeling as though your entire temporary life has been compressed into one standard hotel room.

Cheikh Anta Diop University is also within walking distance, which may be particularly useful for academic, conference or university-related travel.

AfricaWorks is not trying to compete with Pullman as a luxury hotel.

It does not need to.

For a business category, practicality wins.

I’d choose AfricaWorks Suites for a work trip when you want reliable basics, Wi-Fi, a business center, work space, gym access and suite options that make several days of living and working from a hotel considerably easier.

Short Packing List for Dakar

Dakar trips can involve strong sun, Atlantic breezes, beaches, markets, restaurants, long sightseeing days, pool time and excursions beyond the city.

Green canvas backpack with two zippered front pockets and brown suede accents

A few practical items can make those days considerably easier:

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Hotel in Dakar

Choose Hôtel BOMA for a couples trip when you want a polished four-star hotel with a pool, garden, terrace and easy access to the western side of Dakar.

Choose Yaas Hotel Dakar Almadies for a solo trip when included breakfast, food onsite, luggage storage, Wi-Fi and straightforward everyday logistics matter more than resort amenities.

Choose Terrou-Bi Resort for a friend trip when a private beach, pool, marina, casino and live entertainment give everyone something to do even when the group wants different things.

Choose Noom Hotel Dakar Sea Plaza for families when a pool, restaurants, connecting-room possibilities and supervised childcare options can make travel days easier.

Choose Azalai Hotel Dakar for older travelers or guests with lower mobility when documented accessibility features, an elevator and full-service hotel amenities are priorities.

Choose Pullman Dakar Teranga for true luxury when you want five-star surroundings, oceanfront amenities, private beach access, spa time and central Dakar within easy reach.

Choose La Résidence Dakar for a mid-range trip when you want a smaller Les Almadies property with a pool, garden and restaurant without paying for a major luxury resort.

Choose International Hotel Dakar for a budget trip when you want to save money without giving up breakfast, Wi-Fi, restaurant access and the conveniences of a full-service hotel.

Choose AfricaWorks Suites for a business trip when work space, Wi-Fi, a business center, gym and suite-style room options matter more than traditional resort facilities.

Dakar gives travelers more range than you might expect.

You can stay beside the Atlantic.

You can make the hotel part of the vacation.

You can choose something simple and practical and spend nearly every waking hour exploring.

You can book a full five-star escape.

Or you can choose a smaller hotel that gives you exactly what you need without paying for ten amenities you will never use.

The best hotel in Dakar is not automatically the fanciest one.

It is the one that makes the particular trip you are planning easier, more comfortable and more enjoyable.
