France Outlet, Plug & Voltage Guide for Travelers (Complete 2025 Edition) ⚡

Planning a trip to France? Whether you’ll be strolling the Champs-Élysées, browsing boutiques near Rue Cambon, exploring historic villages in Provence, visiting the Loire Valley châteaux, or relaxing along the French Riviera, you’ll want the right gear to keep your electronics charged.

France’s electrical system is not the same as many other countries. It uses 230V power, a 50 Hz frequency, and primarily Type C and Type E plugs.

Depending on where you live, this may or may not match what your devices use at home. Using the wrong setup can damage electronics or leave you without a reliable way to charge your phone.

This guide breaks everything down by region and country, following the same format as my Japan guide and my Italy guide. Scroll or jump to your home area and instantly know exactly what to pack.

Quick Overview: What You Need for France

✔️ Plug Adapters

France primarily uses Type C and Type E plugs.
Most travelers will at least need a plug adapter that works with these types.

Type C adapters are the most common and work in the vast majority of French outlets.

✔️ Dual-Voltage Electronics

Phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, and Kindles are usually 100–240V.
These devices only need a plug adapter, not a voltage converter.

✔️ Avoid Single-Voltage Small Appliances

(Most common examples are hair tools)

If your device label shows 110V or 120V only, do not plug it into France’s 230V outlets without a voltage converter.
A converter changes voltage so your device won’t burn out.
A plug adapter only changes the plug shape — it does not make the voltage safe.

Whenever possible, pack a dual-voltage travel version instead.
If you don’t have one, using the hotel’s hair dryer or styling tools is usually the easiest and safest option.

✔️ Multi-Port USB Charger

Many French hotels—especially in older buildings—have limited outlets.
A single USB charger can handle several devices at once.

✔️ Travel Power Strip (100–240V rated)

A compact power strip lets you charge multiple items using one adapter.

Make sure the strip itself is rated for 100–240V.

✔️ Power Bank

Essential for long sightseeing days. Phones drain faster when using maps, photos, mobile tickets, and navigation.

✔️ Electronics Organizer

Keeps cords and devices together and makes packing, unpacking, and charging in new hotels much easier.

💡 Travel Hack

Bring one plug adapter, then plug your power strip and USB charger into it.
This gives you multiple charging ports from a single French outlet.

🎒 Final Tips for France

  • Check every charger. If it says 100–240V, it’s safe to use in France with a plug adapter.
  • Bring enough adapters and USB ports. Many French hotels—especially older ones—have only a few outlets.
  • Choose an adapter that works with Type C and Type E plugs. A basic European adapter is usually sufficient.
  • Do not pack 110V-only hair tools unless you also bring a voltage converter.
  • Carry a power bank for long days of sightseeing and navigation.

France’s power system is reliable—you just need the right plug.
