Samoa is made up of several islands, but most trips revolve around Upolu and Savaiʻi. Upolu is home to Apia, the international airport and many of Samoa’s best-known attractions, while larger and less populated Savaiʻi offers volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, blowholes, beaches and a quieter pace.

Samoa remains a destination I am comfortable recommending for leisure travel, but there is currently an ongoing dengue outbreak, so mosquito protection should be treated as an important part of trip planning.
Use insect repellent consistently, particularly around dawn and dusk, and choose accommodation with screens or air conditioning when possible.
Samoa can also experience tropical cyclones and severe storms, particularly during the November through April cyclone season. Heavy rain can cause flooding, transportation disruption and changes to ferry or flight schedules.
Earthquakes and tsunamis are also possible. If you are staying near the coast, pay attention to tsunami evacuation signs and know how to reach higher ground.
Swimming conditions deserve more caution than the postcard-perfect water may suggest. Some beaches and lagoons have strong tides and currents, and many swimming areas are not patrolled. Ask locally about conditions before entering unfamiliar water.
There are currently no broad security concerns that would make me recommend postponing an ordinary trip to Samoa, but the dengue outbreak and seasonal weather risks are worth considering when choosing your dates.
🌦️ Samoa Weather by Month
Samoa stays warm and tropical year-round, so you are not choosing between dramatically different temperature seasons. The bigger difference is rainfall.
The drier season generally runs from May through October, while November through April is wetter and more humid. December through March usually brings the heaviest rainfall and the greatest chance of tropical storms.
Use this as a quick planning overview rather than a forecast for your specific trip.

⭐ Best Time to Visit Samoa
For the easiest overall combination of weather, beaches, sightseeing and outdoor activities, May through October is generally the best time to visit Samoa.
These months fall within the drier season, so you are more likely to have comfortable conditions for beach days, snorkeling, waterfall visits, scenic drives, hiking and exploring both Upolu and Savaiʻi.
June through September are especially strong all-around choices if weather is your main priority.
That does not mean the wetter months are automatically a bad time to visit. Samoa remains warm year-round, and tropical rain can come in intense bursts rather than lasting all day.
🌧️ Most Challenging Time to Visit Samoa
December through March is generally the most weather-sensitive period.
This is the wettest part of the year, with higher humidity, heavier rainfall and the greatest chance of tropical storms or cyclones affecting travel.
Road conditions, ferries, flights and outdoor plans can occasionally be disrupted by severe weather.
If you are traveling during the wet season, build a little flexibility into your itinerary rather than scheduling every day tightly.
Important: Tropical weather can be extremely localized. One part of an island can be rainy while another is sunny, so always check the actual forecast close to your trip.
🗺️ Get Oriented: Samoa’s Main Travel Areas
Samoa is an archipelago, but most visitors will spend their time between Upolu and Savaiʻi, with smaller islands such as Manono adding easy side trips.
Upolu
Upolu is the main arrival island and home to Samoa’s capital, international airport and many of its best-known attractions.
You could easily spend an entire trip here.
Apia
Samoa’s small capital sits on Upolu’s north coast and makes a convenient base for markets, restaurants, cultural attractions and exploring other parts of the island.
South Upolu
The south coast is where you will find some of Samoa’s most memorable tropical scenery: beaches, lagoons, waterfalls, dramatic coastline and the famous To-Sua Ocean Trench.
East Upolu
Eastern Upolu is quieter and filled with scenic coastal roads, beaches, waterfalls and small villages.
West Upolu & Manono Island
Western Upolu is convenient for the international airport, Savaiʻi ferry terminal and boats to tiny Manono Island.
Savaiʻi
Savaiʻi is Samoa’s largest island but much less populated than Upolu.
Expect a slower pace, volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, lava fields, blowholes, beaches, rainforest and long stretches of coastline that feel far removed from the capital.
You do not need to rush through both main islands. Samoa works especially well when you give yourself enough time to actually enjoy each place instead of turning every waterfall and beach into another stop on a checklist.

🚢 Cruises Around Samoa
Samoa is a natural stop on South Pacific cruise itineraries, with cruise ships arriving at Apia Harbour on Upolu.
The port is close to central Apia, making Samoa one of those cruise destinations where you can either spend your port day exploring the capital or head farther into the island for beaches, waterfalls, swimming holes and tropical scenery.

If you want an easy day, you can explore local markets, shops, restaurants and cultural attractions without traveling far.

South Pacific Cruises
Samoa is often included as part of wider South Pacific itineraries rather than being the only destination.
These cruises can be a good option for travelers who want to experience Samoa along with several other Pacific islands without arranging separate flights between every destination.
Inter-Island Travel
If you are staying in Samoa rather than visiting by cruise ship, boats are still an important part of getting around.
Passenger and vehicle ferries connect Upolu and Savaiʻi, with the crossing usually taking around 60–90 minutes.
Small boats also connect western Upolu with Manono Island, which makes an easy day trip or quiet overnight escape.

Samoa uses 230V electricity at 50Hz, with Type I outlets — the same basic plug style commonly used in Australia and New Zealand.
Whether you need only a plug adapter or also need to think about voltage compatibility depends on where you are traveling from and what devices you are bringing.
Travelers coming from countries that use around 110–120V, including the United States and Canada, should pay particular attention to the voltage rating on hair tools and other single-voltage appliances.
