Easy One-Stop Planning Guides for Vietnam

Planning a trip to Vietnam can get overwhelming surprisingly fast. Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City? Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh? Hoi An or Hue? Beaches, mountains, islands, food, history — or somehow all of it? When should you go? Where should you stay? What should you pack? Do you need a plug adapter?

Vietnam can give you several completely different trips within one long, narrow country. Hanoi feels historic, atmospheric and wonderfully intense. Central Vietnam brings imperial cities, lantern-lit streets and beaches. The south adds huge-city energy, tropical islands and the watery landscapes of the Mekong Delta, while the north opens into rice terraces, dramatic limestone scenery and mountain roads.

This page brings all of our Vietnam travel planning resources together in one place so you can find what you need without digging through the entire site.

Entry RequirementsDepend on your nationality, passport and length or purpose of stay. Always check the requirements that apply to you before traveling.

Vietnam stretches more than 1,000 miles from north to south, so weather, culture and scenery can change dramatically as you travel.

That is one of the country’s greatest strengths — but it also means you should never assume that the weather in Hanoi tells you what your trip will feel like in Hoi An or Ho Chi Minh City.

⚠️ Current Travel Considerations

Last reviewed: October 4, 2026

Vietnam remains a destination I am comfortable recommending for ordinary leisure travel.

The country is generally very safe for visitors, and the main tourist route through Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and the south is well established.

The biggest practical considerations are traffic, petty theft, tropical weather, flooding and unexploded ordnance in some rural areas.

Petty Theft

Pickpocketing and bag or phone theft can occur in busy tourist areas, markets, nightlife districts and crowded streets.

Keep phones and bags secure, particularly when standing close to traffic, and avoid casually holding valuables toward the road where someone passing on a motorbike could grab them.

Traffic & Motorbikes

Traffic can be one of the biggest culture shocks for first-time visitors.

Scooters and motorbikes dominate many streets, traffic patterns may feel much less predictable than you are used to, and crossing the road can take some getting used to.

If you plan to rent or ride a motorbike yourself, make sure you actually meet Vietnam’s licensing requirements and that your travel insurance covers the activity.

Tropical Storms, Rain & Flooding

Vietnam’s tropical storm season generally runs from May through November.

Storms can bring heavy rain, flooding, landslides, rough seas and transportation disruption.

Rainfall also varies enormously by region.

Northern and southern Vietnam generally receive much of their rain during summer, while Central Vietnam can experience some of its heaviest rain and flooding during September, October and November.

If your trip includes several regions, check the weather for each one rather than relying on a single Vietnam forecast.

Unexploded Ordnance

Unexploded ordnance from past conflicts remains present in some rural areas, particularly around former battlefields and parts of central Vietnam near the Laos border.

Tourist cities and populated areas are generally low risk.

Do not wander into obviously restricted or overgrown areas, leave marked trails in sensitive regions or touch unfamiliar metal objects.

Entry & Arrival Requirements

Vietnam’s entry requirements depend on your nationality and itinerary.

Many travelers need a visa or eVisa before arrival.

International air travelers may also need to complete current pre-arrival or health declaration requirements shortly before travel.

Check the rules that apply to your passport before departure and carefully verify that the dates and information on any visa match your travel plans.

🌦️ Vietnam Weather by Month

Vietnam does not have one uniform climate.

The north, center and south follow different weather patterns, which means there is almost always somewhere in Vietnam experiencing good travel weather.

Use this as a broad planning overview rather than a forecast for your exact itinerary.

MonthWhat to Generally Expect
JanuaryNorthern Vietnam can be cool, gray and occasionally chilly. Central and southern Vietnam are generally warmer, with the south in its drier season.
FebruaryThe north remains relatively cool while warmer, drier conditions continue through much of the south. A popular month for broad Vietnam itineraries.
MarchNorthern Vietnam begins warming. Central Vietnam is often pleasant, and the south remains hot and relatively dry. One of the strongest all-around months.
AprilWarm to hot across much of the country. Humidity begins rising, but many regions still offer excellent sightseeing conditions.
MayHotter and increasingly humid. Rain becomes more frequent in the north and south while central Vietnam can still have good beach weather.
JuneHot and humid. The north and south are firmly within wetter summer patterns, while parts of central Vietnam can remain sunnier and drier.
JulyHot, humid and rainy across much of the country. Tropical downpours are common, but travel remains very possible.
AugustAnother hot and humid month, with substantial rain possible in northern and southern Vietnam.
SeptemberNorthern weather begins improving while central Vietnam moves toward its wetter storm season. Southern Vietnam remains warm and rainy.
OctoberOften beautiful in the north, while Central Vietnam may experience heavy rain, storms and flooding. Southern conditions remain tropical.
NovemberCooler and increasingly dry in northern Vietnam. Central areas can still be very wet, while southern Vietnam begins transitioning toward drier weather.
DecemberCool and generally drier in the north, improving conditions in central regions and warm, increasingly dry weather across much of southern Vietnam.

⭐ Best Time to Visit Vietnam

There is no single perfect month for every Vietnam itinerary, because the country is so long and climatically varied.

For a classic first trip covering several regions, March and April are particularly strong choices.

Northern Vietnam is warming up, central destinations such as Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An often have good conditions, and the south remains firmly tropical.

🌿 Northern Vietnam

Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Sapa and Ha Giang are often particularly pleasant during spring and fall.

October and November can be beautiful in the north, with cooler temperatures and lower humidity.

🏮 Central Vietnam

Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue often work especially well during February through August, although conditions vary from year to year.

The biggest weather concern here tends to arrive during fall, when tropical storms, prolonged rain and flooding become more likely.

🌴 Southern Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc stay warm year-round.

The generally drier period from roughly December through April is especially popular.

🌧️ Most Challenging Time to Visit Vietnam

The hardest time depends entirely on your route.

For Central Vietnam, October and November can be particularly challenging because of heavy rain and flooding.

For travelers who dislike heat and humidity, June through August can feel physically demanding across much of the country.

That does not mean you should automatically avoid summer. Tropical downpours often arrive in concentrated bursts rather than ruining an entire day, and the countryside can be intensely green.

Important: Check actual regional forecasts shortly before departure, particularly if your trip includes boats, islands, mountain roads or Central Vietnam during tropical storm season.

🗺️ Get Oriented: Vietnam’s Main Travel Areas

Vietnam traveler's map

These are the places travelers are most likely to encounter while planning:

Hanoi & Northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay and the Red River Delta

Northern Mountains: Sapa, Ha Giang, rice terraces, mountain roads and minority communities

Central Vietnam: Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An and historic, coastal and imperial destinations

Central Highlands: Da Lat and inland mountain landscapes with cooler temperatures

South-Central Coast: Nha Trang, beaches, islands and coastal resort areas

Ho Chi Minh City & Southern Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, urban experiences and easy access toward the Mekong Delta

Mekong Delta: Can Tho, river communities, floating landscapes, markets and wetlands

Phu Quoc: Tropical beaches, resorts, snorkeling, boat trips and island downtime

Vietnam works particularly well when you combine different kinds of destinations rather than choosing five stops that all serve the same purpose.

A strong first itinerary might mix one major city, one scenery-heavy northern destination, an atmospheric central stop and something slower or tropical at the end.

✈️ Vietnam Airport Guides

Vietnam has a large domestic aviation network, and flying can save an enormous amount of time when you are combining northern, central and southern regions.

Hanoi

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is the main gateway for Hanoi and northern Vietnam.

It is useful for travelers continuing toward Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Sapa and northern mountain routes.

Ho Chi Minh City

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is the primary gateway for Ho Chi Minh City and much of southern Vietnam.

It is also one of the country’s busiest domestic flight hubs.

Da Nang

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is one of the easiest gateways for Central Vietnam.

It works particularly well for Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue, depending on your wider itinerary.

Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) makes the island relatively easy to add to a longer Vietnam trip without relying on a long overland journey.

Cam Ranh / Nha Trang

Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) is the primary aviation gateway for Nha Trang and surrounding coastal resort areas.

Individual Vietnam airport guides will be added as we build them.

🚢 Cruises Around Vietnam

Vietnam can fit into a cruise itinerary in two completely different ways.

Ha Long Bay Cruises

Ha Long Bay’s famous overnight cruises are one of Vietnam’s signature travel experiences.

These are not conventional ocean cruises. They are usually one- or two-night scenic sailings through limestone karsts, caves and sheltered water.

For many travelers, staying overnight gives the bay much more atmosphere than rushing through on a short day excursion.

International Cruise Ports

Vietnam also appears on broader Southeast Asia and Asia cruise itineraries.

Cruise ships may call at ports serving:

Ha Long / Hanoi
Da Nang, Hoi An & Hue
Nha Trang
Ho Chi Minh City

Port locations can be far from the headline destination, so excursion and transportation times matter when comparing itineraries.

🧳 What to Pack for Vietnam

Vietnam packing is much more regional than many travelers expect.

A trip can combine hot southern cities, humid coastlines, tropical rain, cool northern mornings, mountain weather, temples, beaches, boats and aggressively air-conditioned transportation.

🔌 Vietnam Plugs, Outlets & Voltage

Vietnam commonly uses Type A, Type C and Type F outlets, with 220V electricity at 50Hz.

Outlet compatibility can vary more than travelers expect, so a universal adapter is usually the easiest choice for a multi-stop trip.

Whether you need only a plug adapter or also need to consider voltage depends on where you are traveling from and what devices you are bringing.

🎟️ Things to Do in Vietnam

Already know where you’re going — or already there?

Vietnam is especially good for travelers who want experiences woven into the journey rather than only a checklist of landmarks.

In Hanoi, that might mean food tours, cafés, markets, historic sites and street-level city exploration.

Around Ha Long Bay, overnight cruises put the landscape itself at the center of the trip.

Ninh Binh adds small boats, limestone scenery, caves and panoramic viewpoints.

Hoi An brings lantern-lit evenings, food, river experiences, countryside trips and beaches.

Hue focuses much more heavily on imperial history, citadels and royal tombs.

Ho Chi Minh City adds major-city energy, food, nightlife and twentieth-century history.

Farther south, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc bring river journeys, tropical scenery, islands and water-based experiences.

Dedicated Vietnam Things to Do guides will be added here as we build them.
