Traveling light without sacrificing essentials is an art. By employing smart packing strategies, you can maximize space and ensure a stress-free journey. This is a life skill that once learned will serve you all your days and make travel more enjoyable and easier. Once you know how to pack smart you can even go on long trips with carry-on only. For example, I spent a whole month in Thailand with only a backpack and my Monos carry on for my luggage. Here are some of my top packing hacks to help you save space and stay organized:
1. Utilize Compression Packing Cubes
Compression packing cubes are a game-changer for travelers looking to optimize luggage space. Unlike regular packing cubes, these come with an extra zipper that compresses the contents, reducing their volume significantly. Brands like Monos offer compression cubes that can reduce bulk by up to 60%. I personally use the Monos system of compression cubes paired with their carry on that are designed to fit together, but if you want to save some money you may fare well with the LeanTravel compression pack cubes.

2. Build a Versatile Capsule Wardrobe
Select clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Neutral colors and transitional pieces that go from day to night are ideal. A 12-piece capsule wardrobe can handle a wide range of activities and weather conditions while taking up minimal space.

3. Choose Quick-Dry, Easy-to-Wash Fabrics
Go for fabrics like polyester, rayon, or merino wool that dry fast and are easy to wash. These are perfect for travelers who plan to do laundry during their trip, either in the sink or using a hotel laundry service. I personally swear by rayon which is less wrinkly and suitable for most weather conditions.
4. Plan for On-the-Go Laundry
Bring laundry sheets or a small amount of detergent and consider packing a sink stopper and a lightweight clothesline. There are even mini washers that you can pack now. Being able to wash and rewear means you can pack half as much and still stay fresh.

5. Include a Fabric Refresher
A small spray bottle of fabric refresher helps keep clothes smelling clean between washes, especially in humid or high-activity environments. It’s a great travel item that you’ll find you use almost every day to stay fresh and wrinkle free. My favorite travel size one is Oxford & Wells which got me easily through a little over 2 weeks in Italy with only 1 day of washing my clothes on the whole trip.

6. Streamline Toiletries with the Cadence Capsule System
Cadence capsules are magnetic, leakproof, TSA-compliant containers made for travel. Use them to carry skincare, haircare, vitamins, and even jewelry. They fit neatly in any bag and help avoid bulky toiletry kits. These have absolutely transformed my life not just my travel, but I use them in my home as well to keep my bathroom counters less cluttered. The possibilities of what you can compactly and safely bring with you ensure you travel light without skipping out on any parts of your beauty routine or other essentials.

7. Simplify Makeup with Subtl Beauty Stak
The Subtl Beauty Stak is a compact, customizable stack of makeup essentials. With a few clicks, you can carry foundation, blush, eyeshadow, lipstick, and more—all in one palm-sized container. Perfect for travel glam with zero clutter.

8. Organize Electronics in a Dedicated Case
Keep cords, chargers, earbuds, adapters, and power banks in a compact electronics organizer. It prevents tangling, saves time when you need something, and protects your gear from damage. I found this system to be transformative for the ease of moving from one place to the next and having everything I needed to set up in one place. Hot tip: always pack a power strip with USB plugs because no matter where you go, or where you stay, they never have enough plugs.

9. Opt for Foldable or Flat Footwear Like Tieks
Tieks foldable ballet flats are stylish, comfortable, and pack down small—great for dressing up outfits without adding bulk. They’re versatile enough for both sightseeing and a night out. I have a few pairs, but my go-to trip ones are a black pair and a silver pair which gives me something for the day and something a little more jazzy for a night out. I have found Tieks to be shockingly great walking shoes. I have walked all day in them and not had sore feet at the end of the day more times than I can count. Hot tips on Tieks: size up, not down don’t listen to what they recommend, the shoes run tight and absolutely need to be broken in unless you get the “vegan” ones. Be sure to order them in advance and wear them around the house with thick socks to break them in before your trip. Once they are broken in they are the most comfortable shoes you own. Alternately, you can go for a vegan pair if you don’t have time to break them in, just be mindful that the cloth ones will not offer protection from water puddles or rainy days and such like the leather ones will. The only other shoes I bring along on any trip besides a snow trip are a pair of comfortable walking flat sandals. My favorite ones are Taos. They pack flat and give you an alternate walking shoe for a warm or hot day or if you want to give your feet a break and let them breathe for a day. Adjustable sandals are also wonderful if you have swollen feet from a flight. Check out out my swollen feet tips and tricks post.

10. Wear Your Neck Pillow and Use It for Storage
Wear your travel pillow instead of packing it to save space. Bonus hack: some neck pillows unzip to reveal hidden storage. You can fill them with clothing or small soft items to sneak extra packing space on the plane. If you opt for this system just be mindful of putting soft items inside so you don’t compromise on the comfort of your travel pillow on a long flight.

11. Choose a Carry-On with Built-In Compression
Invest in a carry-on like the Monos Carry-On that comes with compression straps or a built-in compression panel. It lets you pack more without exceeding size limits and helps keep everything snug and in place. Check out my full guide for how to pick the best carry-on if you’re not sure what carry-on to use.
12. Pack a Great Raincoat with Pockets and a Hood
A lightweight, waterproof raincoat with a hood is one of the best travel items you can bring—and wear it on the plane to save even more space in your luggage. It keeps you warm on cold flights, dry during unpredictable weather, and stylish year-round. Choose one with zippered pockets so you can keep your passport, boarding pass, and phone close and secure, especially when navigating airports where you’re asked for them repeatedly.
Unless you’re heading to a very cold climate, this one coat can serve as your only outerwear—perfect for layering over your capsule wardrobe and simplifying your outfit planning.

13. Bring a Packable Scarf
A lightweight, foldable scarf is a surprisingly powerful travel accessory. Toss it in your day bag or backpack for easy access. Use it to:
- Stay warm in overly air-conditioned spaces or sudden temperature drops
- Cover your shoulders or head in religious sites with dress codes
- Add a new look to your outfit with minimal space
Look for scarves made of breathable material that still provides warmth—think bamboo, modal, or cotton blends. My personal favorite is the featherweight cashmere scarf made by Ovcio.

By incorporating these space-saving packing hacks, you’ll not only fit more in your suitcase—you’ll also travel with greater ease, flexibility, and comfort. Whether you’re jetting off for a weekend getaway or a month-long adventure, these tips will help you pack smarter, not heavier.
