Botswana is large, sparsely populated and heavily shaped by wilderness. Many of the places travelers come to see are far from the capital and may involve long road transfers, 4WD travel or small-plane flights between safari camps.

Botswana remains a destination I am comfortable recommending for leisure travel, although travelers should currently use increased caution because of crime.
Petty theft and crimes of opportunity can occur, particularly around towns, vehicles, ATMs and places where valuables are visible. More serious crimes, including muggings, break-ins and vehicle smash-and-grabs, are also possible, so normal precautions matter.
Safari travel brings a different set of practical considerations. Large parts of Botswana are remote, and medical help or emergency assistance may be a considerable distance away. Good travel insurance — particularly coverage that makes sense for remote safari travel and evacuation — is worth considering.
Malaria risk also exists in some parts of Botswana, including several major northern safari areas. Travelers visiting places such as Chobe or the Okavango region should check the health guidance that applies to their exact itinerary before departure and plan mosquito protection accordingly.
Wildlife should always be treated as genuinely wild. Follow lodge, camp and guide instructions, particularly after dark and anywhere animals can move freely through unfenced areas.
There are currently no broad concerns that would make me recommend postponing an ordinary Botswana leisure trip, but conditions can change. I review current travel conditions when updating this page.
🌦️ Botswana Weather by Month
Botswana has a semi-arid climate with two very different travel seasons: a hot, rainy summer and a dry winter.
Rain can also be extremely localized, so weather during the green season may vary considerably even between places that are relatively close together.
Use this as a quick planning overview rather than a forecast for your specific trip.

⭐ Best Time to Visit Botswana
For the easiest combination of weather and classic wildlife viewing, May through September is a fantastic time to visit Botswana.
June, July and August are especially popular because the dry season makes vegetation thinner and wildlife easier to spot around water sources.
The Okavango Delta is unusual because its annual flood arrives during Botswana’s dry season, so water-based safari experiences can be particularly impressive even when local rainfall is minimal.
The wetter green season from roughly November through March offers a completely different experience. Landscapes turn lush, migratory birds arrive, many animals give birth and safari areas can feel quieter.
There really isn’t one universally perfect Botswana season — it depends on whether your priority is classic dry-season game viewing, water levels, birding, newborn wildlife, lower crowds or greener scenery.
🥵 Most Challenging Time to Visit Botswana
For many travelers, October into early November is the most challenging period because of the heat.
Temperatures can climb dramatically before the summer rains arrive, and spending long hours outdoors or in open safari vehicles can become exhausting.
January and February present a different challenge. These are among the wettest months, and heavy rain can occasionally affect unpaved roads, wildlife drives and access to remote areas.
Neither period is automatically a bad time to travel. October can offer extraordinary wildlife concentration around water, while the rainy season brings green landscapes, birdlife and newborn animals.
Important: Always check the forecast and conditions for the specific safari regions you’re visiting shortly before departure. Conditions in the Okavango Delta, Chobe, the Kalahari and Gaborone can be quite different.

You do not need to fit all of these into one trip. Botswana’s distances are large, and many safari itineraries are built around a few carefully chosen regions rather than trying to cross the entire country overland.

🐘 Festivals & Seasonal Experiences
In Botswana, wildlife seasons often matter more to trip planning than a traditional festival calendar.
The dry winter months bring classic safari conditions, cooler mornings and animals concentrating around water.
The Okavango flood transforms parts of northern Botswana during the dry season, opening waterways for mokoro trips and other water-based wildlife experiences.
The green season brings summer rains, dramatic clouds, lush vegetation, migratory birds and newborn animals.
The Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan region can also feel completely transformed after the rains, when wildlife follows fresh grazing and seasonal water.

🚢 Cruises Around Botswana
Botswana is landlocked, so it is not a conventional ocean-cruise destination.
But some of the country’s most memorable wildlife experiences happen on the water.
Chobe River boat safaris offer a completely different perspective from a game drive, particularly when elephants, buffalo and other wildlife gather along the riverbanks.
In the Okavango Delta, traditional mokoro excursions carry travelers through shallow channels and reeds at water level.
These aren’t traditional cruises, but water-based safaris are absolutely worth considering when planning a Botswana trip.

🏨 Where to Stay in Botswana
Where you stay in Botswana can shape the entire trip.
Many travelers use Maun as the gateway to the Okavango Delta, staying there before or after a safari or between flights and lodge transfers.
Remote safari regions work differently from normal city destinations. Lodges and camps may include meals, wildlife activities, transfers and other logistics as part of the stay, so compare what’s included rather than looking only at the nightly room rate.

🧳 What to Pack for Botswana
Packing for Botswana is heavily influenced by safari schedules, season and transportation.
Dry-season days may be sunny and warm while early-morning game drives can feel genuinely cold. Summer brings heat, storms and more insects.
Luggage rules can also matter more than usual if your itinerary includes small-plane flights to safari camps.

🔌 Botswana Plugs, Outlets & Voltage
Botswana uses 230V electricity at 50Hz, with Type D, G and M outlets.
Because multiple plug types can be encountered, a good universal travel adapter can be particularly useful.
Travelers coming from 110–127V countries also need to check the voltage rating on appliances before plugging them in. Most modern phones, laptops and USB chargers are usually dual voltage, but hair tools and other heating appliances may not be.
