Easy One-Stop Planning Guides for Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda may be one small Caribbean country, but choosing where to stay can completely change the kind of trip you have.

Antigua is the larger and more developed island, with beautiful resort beaches, historic harbours, sailing culture, waterfront restaurants, colourful St. John’s and enough coastline to spend days exploring a different beach every afternoon.

Barbuda feels completely different.

It is quieter, less developed and much more nature-focused, with long stretches of pale and pink-tinged sand, the enormous Codrington Lagoon and its famous frigatebird colony, peaceful scenery and far fewer traditional tourist facilities.

Even within Antigua, the experience changes significantly between the resort-friendly northwest, historic English Harbour, the relaxed west coast and quieter stretches farther around the island.

This page brings all of our Antigua and Barbuda travel planning resources together in one place so you can decide which part of the country fits your trip and find everything else you need without digging through the entire site.

Antigua and Barbuda consists of two main inhabited islands plus smaller islands and the uninhabited island of Redonda.

Antigua is where most visitors stay. It has the main international airport, St. John’s, most of the country’s resorts and restaurants, Nelson’s Dockyard and the largest range of beaches and activities.

Barbuda lies roughly 40–45 km north of Antigua and is reached by ferry or small aircraft.

The islands are close enough to combine in one trip, but not so close that Barbuda should be treated like a quick neighborhood change. If you want to stay on both islands, plan the transfer as a real part of your itinerary.

⚠️ Current Travel Considerations

Last reviewed: November 6, 2026

Antigua and Barbuda remains a destination I am comfortable recommending for ordinary leisure travel.

There are no major current travel disruptions affecting typical vacations to Antigua or Barbuda.

Hurricane Season

The main seasonal consideration is Caribbean hurricane season, which runs from June through November.

Tropical storms and hurricanes can affect flights, ferries, boat excursions and hotel operations.

Travel during hurricane season is completely possible, but flexible bookings become especially useful from late summer through fall.

Barbuda Transportation

Barbuda is much less developed than Antigua, so transportation deserves more planning.

Visitors can travel between Antigua and Barbuda by ferry or small aircraft, but schedules should be confirmed before building an itinerary around a same-day connection.

If you are staying overnight on Barbuda, arranging local transportation in advance can also make the trip much easier.

For most travelers, those are the main practical considerations. Antigua and Barbuda is otherwise a straightforward Caribbean destination to plan.

🌦️ Antigua and Barbuda Weather by Month

Antigua and Barbuda stays warm throughout the year.

Seasonal changes are driven more by rainfall, humidity, trade winds and hurricane risk than by dramatic temperature changes.

MonthWhat to Generally Expect
JanuaryWarm, breezy and relatively dry. Excellent weather for beaches, sightseeing and sailing.
FebruaryWarm and generally dry, with comfortable humidity and plenty of sunshine.
MarchOne of the driest periods of the year and an excellent month for beach holidays and outdoor exploring.
AprilWarm, sunny and still within the generally drier part of the year.
MayWarmer and slightly wetter, with increasing humidity and occasional tropical showers.
JuneHot, humid and increasingly tropical. Hurricane season begins, although many days remain sunny.
JulyWarm to hot with a mix of sunshine, passing showers and humid conditions.
AugustHot and humid, with tropical showers and increasing hurricane-season awareness.
SeptemberOne of the quieter and more weather-sensitive periods, with high heat, humidity and greater tropical-storm risk.
OctoberWarm and humid with more frequent rain possible. Hurricane season remains active.
NovemberStill warm, with rainfall gradually becoming less dominant as the drier season approaches.
DecemberWarm, breezy and increasingly dry, with popular holiday-season travel beginning.

⭐ Best Time to Visit Antigua and Barbuda

For the easiest combination of sunshine, lower humidity and dependable beach weather, December through April is particularly appealing.

It is also the most popular season.

☀️ December Through April

This is classic Caribbean holiday weather.

Days are warm, rain is generally less frequent and conditions are excellent for beaches, sailing, boat trips and exploring historic areas.

🌴 May & June

May and June can be a good compromise for travelers who want warm weather with fewer peak-season crowds.

Rain becomes more common, but many days still include long sunny periods.

🌧️ July Through November

Summer and fall bring more humidity and greater tropical-weather risk.

This period also includes some of Antigua and Barbuda’s biggest cultural events, so avoiding it completely means missing a different side of the country.

Flexible travel arrangements simply become more important.

⛵ Sailing Season

Antigua has one of the Caribbean’s strongest sailing traditions.

Major regattas and yacht events can dramatically change the atmosphere around English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour, so sailing enthusiasts may deliberately plan around them while travelers seeking a quieter stay may prefer different dates.

🗺️ Get Oriented: Antigua and Barbuda’s Main Travel Areas

Antigua and Barbuda traveler's map

The country is small, but the main visitor areas feel surprisingly different.

St. John’s & Northwest Antigua: The capital, Redcliffe Quay, Heritage Quay, Fort James, Dickenson Bay, Runaway Bay, established resorts, restaurants, shopping and easy access to the airport

English Harbour & Falmouth Harbour: Nelson’s Dockyard, historic architecture, marinas, sailing culture, Shirley Heights, Pigeon Point Beach, boutique accommodations and romantic waterfront atmosphere

Jolly Harbour & West Coast Antigua: Jolly Beach, Ffryes Beach, Darkwood Beach, Valley Church Beach, villas, marina life and some of Antigua’s prettiest sunset coastline

Barbuda: Codrington, Codrington Lagoon, the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, pink-sand beaches, Princess Diana Beach, caves, wildlife and a much quieter island experience

Those four areas are enough to understand the main differences without turning every beach or attraction into a separate destination.

Best Places to Visit in Antigua and Barbuda: Caribbean Beaches, Historic Harbours & Island Escapes

Antigua and Barbuda combines two very different Caribbean experiences.

Antigua gives you colourful St. John’s, resort beaches, historic English Harbour, sailing culture, waterfront dining and a coastline filled with beautiful places to swim and relax.

Barbuda offers something much quieter, with long secluded beaches, remarkable birdlife and an island atmosphere that feels far removed from larger Caribbean resort destinations.

This guide compares the four areas that genuinely make sense as travel bases rather than padding the list with individual attractions.

🎉 Festivals & Special Events

Antigua and Barbuda has a surprisingly busy annual events calendar.

Antigua Sailing Week and other major regattas bring international sailing energy to English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour.

Antigua Carnival fills late July and early August with music, costumes, parades and celebrations.

Barbuda Caribana brings festival celebrations to Barbuda.

Food events, art celebrations, cricket and cultural festivals appear throughout the year as well.

If a particular event matters to your trip, check the dates before booking because accommodation demand can rise quickly around major sailing weeks, Carnival and holiday periods.

✈️ Antigua and Barbuda Airport Guides

Antigua and Barbuda currently has two principal airports serving travelers.

V.C. Bird International Airport

V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU) is located on Antigua and is the country’s primary international gateway.

Most international visitors arrive here.

The airport is especially convenient for travelers staying around St. John’s, Dickenson Bay and northwestern Antigua, but Antigua is compact enough that transfers to Jolly Harbour, English Harbour and most major resort areas remain manageable.

ANU also serves as the main connection point for travelers continuing onward to Barbuda.

A dedicated V.C. Bird International Airport guide will be added here as we build our coverage.

Burton-Nibbs International Airport

Burton-Nibbs International Airport (BBQ) serves Barbuda.

The newer airport replaced Barbuda’s former Codrington airfield and allows travelers to reach the island by small regional aircraft rather than relying entirely on the ferry.

Barbuda remains a much smaller aviation market than Antigua, so travelers should plan around available service rather than assuming flights operate as frequently as they do at ANU.

A dedicated Barbuda airport guide will be added here as we build our coverage.

🚢 Cruises Around Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua is a major Caribbean cruise destination.

St. John’s, Antigua

Most cruise visitors arrive in St. John’s Harbour, placing them directly beside the capital’s waterfront shopping and within easy reach of many of Antigua’s most popular attractions.

A typical port day can include:

St. John’s and Redcliffe Quay
Dickenson Bay
Nelson’s Dockyard
English Harbour
Shirley Heights
Jolly Beach and the west coast
Catamaran or sailing excursions
Snorkeling and beach trips

Because Antigua’s biggest attractions are spread around the island, organized excursions, taxis or private drivers can be especially useful for cruise passengers working with a fixed amount of time.

Barbuda

Barbuda is not a conventional large-ship cruise destination in the same way Antigua is.

It makes much more sense as a deliberate ferry, flight or small-ship experience for travelers who specifically want to visit the island.

🏨 Where to Stay in Antigua and Barbuda

A dedicated Antigua and Barbuda hotel guide will be added here as we build our coverage.

It will compare the best hotel options for different types of travelers, including couples, solo travelers, friend trips, families, older travelers / lower mobility, luxury, mid-range and budget stays, followed by relevant specialty categories such as honeymooners, destination weddings and all-inclusive resorts.

Barbuda has a much smaller accommodation inventory than Antigua, so its properties will need to be treated differently rather than forced into the same selection depth as the larger island.

🧳 What to Pack for Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda is tropical, but a dedicated packing guide needs to account for much more than beach weather.

A trip can include strong Caribbean sun, boat excursions, snorkeling, historic sightseeing, breezy evenings, tropical rain and long days moving between beaches and harbours.

Barbuda also requires a little more planning because shops and services are much more limited than on Antigua.

Dedicated seasonal Antigua and Barbuda packing guides will be added here as we build them.

🔌 Antigua and Barbuda Plugs, Outlets & Voltage

Antigua and Barbuda’s electrical system deserves a dedicated guide because voltage can vary between properties.

The national supply is commonly around 220–240V, but some hotels and resorts provide 110–120V outlets, particularly for visitors using North American-style appliances.

That means travelers should not assume the outlet in one hotel will necessarily match the electrical setup at another property.

Before plugging in hair tools, heating appliances or other single-voltage devices, check both the outlet and the voltage label on the appliance.

Phones, cameras, laptops, tablets and chargers labeled 100–240V, 50/60Hz are much easier to travel with because they are designed for multiple electrical systems.

A dedicated Antigua and Barbuda plug and voltage guide will be added here as we build it.

🎟️ Things to Do in Antigua and Barbuda

Already know where you’re staying — or already there?

Antigua and Barbuda is especially good for travelers who want to combine beaches, sailing, history and nature rather than spending the entire trip inside a resort.

Around St. John’s and northwest Antigua, you can explore Redcliffe Quay, visit Fort James, browse local markets and spend time at Dickenson Bay or Runaway Bay.

In English Harbour, Nelson’s Dockyard is the centerpiece, while nearby Falmouth Harbour, Shirley Heights and Pigeon Point Beach create one of the most atmospheric areas on Antigua.

Along the west coast, beach-hopping becomes the main event, with Jolly Beach, Ffryes Beach, Darkwood Beach and Valley Church Beach all within the same broader part of the island.

On Barbuda, the experience changes completely.

The Frigate Bird Sanctuary, Codrington Lagoon, quiet beaches, caves and long stretches of undeveloped coastline make it especially appealing for nature lovers and travelers who prefer a slower trip.

Sailing, snorkeling, catamaran trips, kayaking and other water-based activities are available throughout the destination.

Dedicated Antigua and Barbuda Things to Do guides will be added here as we build them.
