Planning a trip to Italy? Whether youโll be exploring Romeโs ancient ruins, wandering medieval streets in Florence, cruising the Amalfi Coast, or relaxing in the Dolomites, youโll want the right gear to keep your electronics charged.
Italyโs electrical system is not the same as many other countries.
It uses 230V power, a 50 Hz frequency, and three plug types: C, F, and L.
Depending on where you live, this may or may not match what your devices use at home. Using the wrong setup can damage electronics or leave you without a way to charge your phone.
This guide breaks everything down by region and country, following the same format as my Japan guide. Scroll to your home area and instantly know exactly what to pack.
โก Quick Overview: What You Need for Italy
โ๏ธ Plug Adapters
Italy uses Type C, F, and L plugs.
Most travelers will at least need a plug adapter that works with these types.
โ๏ธ Dual-Voltage Electronics
Phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, and Kindles are usually 100โ240V.
These only need a plug adapter, not a converter.
โ๏ธ Avoid Single-Voltage Small Appliances
(Most common examples are hair tools)
If your device label shows 110V or 120V only, do not plug it into Italyโs 230V outlets without a voltage converter.
A converter changes voltage so your device wonโt burn out.
A plug adapter only changes the plug shape โ it does not make the voltage safe.
Whenever possible, pack a dual-voltage travel version instead.
If you donโt have one, using the hotelโs hair dryer or styling tools is usually the easiest and safest option.
โ๏ธ Multi-Port USB Charger
Many older Italian hotels have limited outlets.
A single USB charger can handle several devices at once.
โ๏ธ Travel Power Strip (100โ240V rated)
A compact power strip lets you charge multiple items using one adapter.
โ๏ธ Power Bank
Essential for long sightseeing days. Phones drain faster when using maps, photos, mobile tickets, and navigation.
โ๏ธ Electronics Organizer
Helps keep all cords and devices together. Makes packing, unpacking, and charging in new hotels much easier.
๐ก Travel Hack
Bring one plug adapter, then plug your power strip and USB charger into it.
This gives you many outlets from a single Italian socket.
๐ Italyโs Electrical Basics
Plug Types:
- Type C โ two round pins
- Type F โ two round pins with side grounding clips
- Type L โ three round pins in a row (older buildings often use these)
Voltage: 230V
Frequency: 50 Hz
โ๏ธ Safe (With Only an Adapter)
- Phones
- Laptops
- Tablets
- Cameras
- Power banks
- E-readers / Kindles
- Bluetooth headphones / earbuds
โ ๏ธ Not Always Safe
- Hair dryers
- Curling irons
- Straighteners
- Steamers
- Heating pads
- Cheap/old chargers
- Electric kettles
โ๏ธ Check the Voltage Label Before You Pack
Look at the small print on each charger or device:
โ110Vโ or โ120V onlyโ โ Not safe in Italy. You must use a voltage converter, or the device can burn out.
โ100โ240Vโ โ Safe in Italy. You only need a plug adapter.
