⚠️ Current Travel Considerations

Last reviewed: September 5, 2026

India remains a destination I am comfortable recommending for many leisure trips, but it requires more planning and awareness than some easier travel destinations.

Crime, scams, harassment and sexual violence are concerns travelers should take seriously. Women traveling alone should be particularly thoughtful about transportation, accommodation location, late-night travel and isolated areas.

Terrorism and civil unrest also remain concerns, and some regions carry significantly higher risks than the country overall. Parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, areas close to the India-Pakistan border and some insurgency-affected parts of central, eastern and northeastern India require much more careful consideration.

Do not assume that because one part of India is fine to visit, every part of the country has the same conditions.

Seasonal problems can also affect trips. Extreme heat can become dangerous before the monsoon, heavy rain can cause flooding and landslides, cyclones can affect coastal regions and air pollution can become severe in parts of northern India during cooler months.

For ordinary tourist itineraries through destinations such as Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Mumbai, Goa, Kerala and Kolkata, I am still comfortable recommending travel with appropriate planning and awareness.

Conditions can change, particularly in sensitive regions, so I review current travel conditions when updating this page.

🌦️ India Weather by Month

India does not have one simple weather calendar.

The northern plains, Rajasthan, Himalayas, tropical south, western coast and northeast can all experience very different conditions at the same time.

Use this as a broad trip-planning overview rather than a forecast for your specific destination.

MonthWhat to Generally Expect
JanuaryOne of the most comfortable months for much of India. Northern cities can have cold mornings and nights, while Goa, Kerala and much of the south stay warm. Snow affects high Himalayan regions.
FebruaryPleasant across many classic sightseeing areas, with warming days but generally comfortable conditions. Southern India remains warm.
MarchTemperatures rise quickly, especially across northern and central India. Early March can still be pleasant, while later weeks begin moving firmly into hot season.
AprilHot across much of the plains and interior. Hill stations and higher elevations become increasingly appealing.
MayOften brutally hot across northern, central and interior India, with extreme heat possible. One of the hardest months for sightseeing-heavy trips in the plains.
JuneMonsoon begins reaching parts of India while intense heat can linger elsewhere. Humidity rises sharply and heavy rain becomes increasingly common.
JulyMonsoon conditions cover much of the country. Expect humidity, heavy downpours, flooding risk and possible landslides in mountain regions.
AugustMonsoon continues across many areas. Landscapes can be beautifully green, but rain and transportation disruptions are real considerations.
SeptemberStill wet and humid in many regions, especially earlier in the month. Conditions gradually begin improving as the monsoon retreats unevenly.
OctoberA major transition month. Much of northern and central India becomes drier and more comfortable, while parts of southern and southeastern India can still experience significant rain.
NovemberExcellent sightseeing weather across many popular regions. Northern India becomes cooler and drier, while the south remains warm. Air pollution can be a major issue in some northern cities.
DecemberOne of the most popular travel months. Comfortable conditions dominate many classic routes, although northern nights can be surprisingly cold and mountain areas may have snow.

⭐ Best Time to Visit India

For many first-time itineraries, November through February is the easiest overall window for visiting India.

This works particularly well for trips involving Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, Varanasi, Goa and Kerala because you avoid much of the punishing pre-monsoon heat.

November and February can be especially good compromises between weather and peak holiday crowds.

That does not mean winter is best everywhere. Himalayan travel, wildlife trips, beaches, monsoon landscapes and southern destinations all have their own ideal seasons.

🥵 Most Challenging Time to Visit India

For sightseeing-heavy trips through the northern and central plains, May and early June are often the most challenging period because temperatures can become extreme.

July and August present a different challenge. Monsoon rain, flooding, humidity and transportation disruptions can make some itineraries harder even when temperatures are lower.

Neither period makes all of India impossible to visit.

The key is choosing a region that actually suits the season rather than treating the entire country as if it shares one climate.

Important: Always check the forecast for the exact cities and regions you are visiting shortly before departure. Delhi, Goa, Kerala and the Himalayas can require completely different packing on the same date.

🗺️ Get Oriented: India’s Main Travel Areas

India traveler's map

India is too large to treat as one destination.

These are some of the major areas travelers are most likely to encounter while planning:

Delhi & the Golden Triangle: New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur

Rajasthan: Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and other fort, palace and desert destinations

North India: Varanasi, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand

The Himalayas: Mountain regions across northern India, including high-altitude destinations where weather, road access and regional travel conditions require additional planning

Western India: Mumbai, Goa and Gujarat

Southern India: Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and major cities such as Kochi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad

Eastern India: Kolkata, West Bengal and Odisha

Northeast India: Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and other northeastern states, where landscapes and cultures differ dramatically from the better-known Golden Triangle routes and some areas require additional permits or safety planning

Trying to cover all of India in one vacation is rarely a good idea.

Pick a region or a few destinations that connect logically and give yourself enough time to actually experience them.

🚢 Cruises Around India

India appears on a smaller number of cruise itineraries than many major Asian destinations, but there are still opportunities to visit the country by sea.

Mumbai is India’s most important cruise gateway, while itineraries may also include ports such as Goa, Kochi and Chennai. India can appear on longer Asia, Indian Ocean, Middle East and repositioning cruises rather than cruises focused entirely on the country.

A cruise can be an interesting way to add a few Indian destinations to a larger trip, but it is very different from exploring India overland. Port days are short, distances between attractions can be significant and some of India’s most famous destinations are nowhere near the coast.
