⚠️ Current Travel Considerations
Last reviewed: September 1, 2026
Spain remains a destination I am comfortable recommending for ordinary leisure travel.
Travelers should currently use increased awareness because of terrorism concerns and the possibility of demonstrations or civil unrest, particularly around major public events, transportation hubs, busy tourist areas and large gatherings.
Pickpocketing and other petty theft are among the most common problems visitors encounter, particularly in heavily visited areas of cities such as Barcelona and Madrid, around major attractions and on crowded public transportation.
There is currently one important regional exception: I would not recommend including Ceuta in an ordinary leisure itinerary right now because of current unrest concerns.
For the rest of Spain, there are currently no broad concerns that would make me recommend postponing a normal leisure trip, but conditions can change. I review current travel conditions when updating this page.
🌦️ Spain Weather by Month
Spain does not have one single climate. Northern Spain is generally cooler and wetter, Madrid and the interior have greater temperature swings, Mediterranean destinations tend to be milder, Andalusia can become intensely hot, and the Canary Islands have their own subtropical climate.
Use this as a quick planning overview rather than a forecast for your specific trip.
| Month | What to Generally Expect |
|---|---|
| January | Winter conditions. Cool to cold inland and in northern Spain, milder along parts of the Mediterranean coast and much warmer in the Canary Islands. |
| February | Still wintery in much of the country, although southern and coastal areas can have pleasantly mild days. |
| March | Transitional and changeable. Spring begins warming southern Spain first while northern and inland areas can remain cool. |
| April | Generally mild spring weather with increasing warmth, longer days and periodic rain. |
| May | Warm and often excellent for sightseeing before the strongest summer heat and peak crowds arrive. |
| June | Warm to hot across much of Spain with long days and rapidly increasing beach and city crowds. |
| July | Hot across most of the country and potentially extremely hot in inland and southern Spain. Peak travel season. |
| August | Hot, sunny and very busy in beach and island destinations. Inland and southern cities can be intensely hot. |
| September | Often still summery, particularly early in the month and around the Mediterranean. Temperatures gradually become more comfortable. |
| October | Mild to warm in many southern and coastal areas, cooler farther north and inland, with increasing rain in some regions. |
| November | Cooler and quieter, with wetter conditions possible in northern Spain and much cooler evenings inland. |
| December | Winter conditions return, with cold inland and northern weather, milder Mediterranean areas and festive Christmas atmosphere throughout the country. |
⭐ Best Time to Visit Spain
For the best overall combination of comfortable sightseeing weather, manageable crowds and regional flexibility, April through May and September through October are generally the easiest times to visit Spain.
May and September are especially good all-around choices. They work well for trips combining cities, coastlines and multiple regions without the strongest midsummer heat.
There are important exceptions depending on the trip you’re planning. Summer makes sense for beach vacations, Mallorca, Ibiza and other coastal or island destinations, while winter can be excellent for quieter city trips and the Canary Islands.
🥵 Most Challenging Time to Visit Spain
For many sightseeing-focused travelers, July and August are the most challenging months, particularly in Madrid, Seville, Córdoba, Granada and other inland or southern destinations.
Extreme heat can make long walking days exhausting, while popular coastal and island destinations become crowded and more expensive.
August deserves extra consideration because it combines high international demand with domestic holiday travel, making many beach destinations especially busy.
That doesn’t make summer a bad time to visit Spain — especially if beaches, islands or nightlife are the priority — but travelers focused on comfortable city sightseeing will usually find spring or fall easier.
Important: Always check the actual forecast for the cities and regions you’re visiting shortly before departure. San Sebastián, Madrid, Seville and Tenerife can require completely different clothing on the same date.
🗺️ Get Oriented: Spain’s Main Travel Areas

These are the places travelers are most likely to encounter while planning:
Central Spain: Madrid, Toledo and Segovia
Catalonia & Northeastern Spain: Barcelona, Costa Brava and Girona
Northern Spain: San Sebastián, Bilbao, Asturias, Galicia and Santiago de Compostela
Eastern Mediterranean Coast: Valencia, Alicante and the Costa Blanca
Southern Spain / Andalusia: Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Málaga, Cádiz and the Costa del Sol
Balearic Islands: Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera
Canary Islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the smaller islands
You do not need to fit all of these into one trip. Spain rewards regional travel, and trying to combine Barcelona, Madrid, Andalusia, northern Spain and the islands into one short vacation can turn a wonderful trip into a transportation marathon.

🚢 Cruises Around Spain
Spain is one of Europe’s major cruise destinations, with Barcelona serving as one of the Mediterranean’s most important embarkation ports.
Barcelona works particularly well because you can combine several days of city sightseeing with a Mediterranean cruise rather than treating the city as nothing more than a departure point.

🧳 What to Pack for Spain
What you need depends heavily on when and where you’re visiting.
Spain’s regions can feel very different at the same time of year, so a northern Spain itinerary may require more layers and rain protection than a trip through Andalusia or the Mediterranean coast.
